The Dolac Market

Writer: Isabella JurkovicIsabella Jurkovic

The biggest market in Zagreb

Just steps away from the cathedral and the main square is where you will find this grand market!

The Dolac is the biggest market for local farmers to sell their products. In Zagreb you can find many of these markets, where people depend on their fresh, locally grown produce. In fact, most people prefer it to grocery stores as they know that they will get their food from the source. These markets are populated and run all year long, even in the winter months and on those rainy, windy days. There is dedication to providing good food here!

On the upstairs, outdoor level, you can find locally farmed fruits and vegetables and the Fish Market, which in Croatian is called the Ribarnica. This is where you will find fish from the Adriatic Sea and fresh water fish from Croatia and abroad. There are also sellers of traditional fabrics, table cloths, and folk costumes, such as those with the symbol of Zagreb, the heart. On this level, you can also find flowers for growing or for showing.

When in Zagreb, you will notice that red umbrellas are used as a symbol for the city. You will find these umbrellas in use at the Dolac.

The word "market" in Croatian is "tržnica".

There is more to the market downstairs too. It can be accessed from the southern street level next to the stairs and flower market by the main square Ban Jelacic. The downstairs market is mainly a meat market with a dairy section on the east side of the building. There are also some bakeries for fresh bread, noodles, strudel dough, more vegetable stands especially the ones that sell the famous sour cabbage- "kiselo kupus" or "zelje" egg stalls, and locally grown mushrooms.
